Project: "Enhancing Livelihoods Security of Small and Marginal Farmers through Innovative Agricultural Practices in Kandhamal districts of Odisha "

Madhyam Foundation launched a three year project on 1st January, 2020 with the support of Azim Premji Foundation, Bengaluru. The project is being implemented among 4,000 small and marginal and land less farmer households in 60 villages of G.Udayagiri and Raikia block in Kandhamal district of Odisha. The main objective of this project is to increase household level income by enhancing production and productivity in vegetable, turmeric, ginger, potato, and tuber crop cultivation through innovative and sustainable agriculture practices. In spite of many huddles such as restriction on movement , public gathering and transportation restriction during Covid-19 pandemic , erratic rain fall Madhyam was able to achieve its planned outcomes and farmers got Rs 40,000 to Rs 70,000 as additional income per year apart from house hold consumption. Crop diversification made a copping mechanism for the farmers and accepentance of crop rotation could be observed among farmers.
Madhyam Foundation approached AzimPremji foundation for saturation of coverage of eligible households and deepening of its activities in the project villages and its adjoining new grampanchyats from G.Udayagiri block . As a result Madhyam targeted to cover total 5000 households in 7 grampanchayats of Raikia(1) and G.Udayagiri(6 ) which includes 2759 old farmers and & 2241 new households in continuing the 1st phase of support . Apart from this Madhyam also aims to cover 500 land less farmers to undertake goat rearing and back yard poultry in continuing the 1st phase of support. In second phase Madhyam planned to pilot Broccoli and belpeper cultivation as crop diversification strategy covering 200 farmer households apart from Ginger, turmeric, vegetable and potato cultivation and promotion of another 25 numbers of 0.5 acre(50 decimal Land) model. 0.5 model means cultivation of various vegetable s ,climber crops and drum stick, Banana papaya in 50 decimal of land following crop plan, rotation of land ,crop calendar, off season crop following natural farming practices round the year without keeping idle of land. As a result the farmer would get at least Rs 1, 00,000/- to Rs 1, 20,000/- additional income per year.
Objectives:-
The main objective of the project is to maximize production and productivity in small fragmented landholding of small & marginal farmers through introduction of crop planning ,new agricultural sustainable practices, crop diversification ,reduction in input cost , onsite handholding support , introduction of new variety of improved seeds,& capacity building of farmers.
Expected result:-
The expected result of the project are to increase the household income of 5,000 women farmers belonging to small, marginal and land less farmers of G. Udayagiri & Raikia block of Kandhamal district in Odisha, India . Expected results are as follows:-
- 1800 out of 2000 new farmer households have an income of Rs 55,000 over the base of Rs 25,000/-
- 2500 existing farmer households (out of 2759 ) have an income of Rs 70,000/- from the current base of Rs 40,000 cultivating up to half acre of land in subsectors such as vegetable, turmeric, Ginger, Broccoli, Bel pepper & potato cultivation.
This is also expected that out of 500 landless farmer ,400 land less will get at least Rs16,000/-per year .
